I wish I had a Savvy...
'Savvy' tells the story of the Beaumont family - Momma, Poppa, Grandpa, Mibs, Rocket, Fish and Samson. When a Beaumont turns thirteen, they get what is called a Savvy: a [normally] supernatural power, if you like. Rocket can control electricity, Fish creates hurricanes, and Grandpa Bomba moves the Earth [literally]. Mibs' thirteenth birthday is coming up, and she's anxious to find out what her Savvy will be. It's something that both surprises and enlightens her, and is something that we, as a reader, never expect.Just before Mibs turns thirteen, her Father is involved in a car crash, which sends the Beaumont children - along with their friends Will and Bobby - on a journey to reach the hospital in time. Along the way, they make new friends, connect with old ones, and discover themselves and what their powers mean.'Savvy', essentially a coming of age story, is a brilliant debut novel from newcomer Ingrid Law. And even though it's marketed at children aged 8-12, older readers should also enjoy it (I'm twenty-one... and I found myself utterly enthralled!).I'd highly recommend this book, and I look forward to future novels by this author.

A cheerful ya road trip
A bright narrator with a clear voice. Well realized secondary characters. A fantasy element that isn't all magic and wands. An unplanned road trip, complications, and antic situations. What's not to like? Especially of interest is the American folk sense of this book. It's not all castles or Egyptians or Greek myth. And it's not wands and spells. Those are just fine, but this book feels much more like Appalachian "Jack" tales, or Pecos Bill/Johnny Appleseed/John Henry. That's a nice change and allows for a fresh voice and a change in the usual fare. (For more along these lines you can try Bemis's "Clockwork Dark" series, or Milford's "Boneshaker", which also incorporate stories and characters from American myth tales.) So, a very very nice change of pace and tone, and certainly worth a try.

Growing up the magical way
A rites of passage novel with a difference. Mibs's brother Rocket can control electricity, zipping and zapping all over the place. Her brother Fish creates storms and hurricanes. Her mum is just perfect. And now Mibs is turning 13 - her own savvy birthday. What will her special power turn out to be?Blending a rites-of-passage theme with a road trip, a family crisis and a dash of the supernatural, this book stirs a range of ingredients into its bubbling pot. There are some surprises along the way - and some predictable moments. The book isn't faultless, and it has the odd moment that doesn't quite ring true, or feels clumsy or contrived. But it's also full of invention and and lyrical language. Sweet, quirky, original and artfully naive, this book has so much to enjoy that the odd false note hardly matters.

Let down
The blurb leads you into falsely thinking that this is going to be an exciting book about kids with superpowers. Unfortunately it isn't. It could've been so much more. Average.

This was a really fun book to read.Mississippi, aka Mibs, and her family each get a magical gift, called a savvy, on their thirteenth birthday. Rocket, Mibs's brother, has the savvy of being able to control electricity. He is a lot like those comic book heroes, good-looking with electric sparks coming off of his hands. At thirteen, her other brother, Fish, found out that he can control weather, especially causing water storms. So at thirteen the kids become homeschooled and have to learn how to control their special abilities. When the story opens, Mibs is two days away from turning thirteen herself. She is excited about her special birthday when her father is in a horrible twelve-car accident on the highway. He ends up in a coma in a hospital in Salina, Kansas. When she gets her savvy, she is being taken care of by the minister's wife and all she can think of is how to get to her Poppa. Mibs, Fish, her little brother, Samson, and two of the minister's kids run away to find Poppa. SAVVY is the story of their adventures crossing Nebraska and Kansas, trying to control savvys, which is called scumbling, learning to see the good in people, and, of course, the courage it takes to act on your ideals and love.I loved the writing in this book. The author uses a lot of figurative language. Besides metaphor and simile, Ingrid Law also uses a lot of alliteration in the telling of the story. Phrases such as pushing-pulling waves, itch and scritch of birthday buzz, or how about a gaggle of flat-footed goslings. It was remarkable how the author could use language to make this story even better than it already was.So if you want to read a really good story about growing up or if you just love the sound of language, then this is the book for you. Have a really rad read!Reviewed by: Marta Morrison

coming-of-age with a twist
Both LadyGruntled & Gruntledsdottir (for whom this book was purchased) thoroughly loved this one. It's a very well done coming-of-age story with a twist, I'm told; given other books they love which I've also read, I trust their judgement.

Savvy
Very cool character and story, parts of family and loving parts. Superpowers included. Very grabbing attention, I was hooked by the first sentence. I suggest this to people who like fantasy. Good job to the author.

Algo lento
Un argumento original y con muchas posibilidades al que se le podría haber sacado más partido y mucha más punta.

reading to the kids, at least one chapter a night
The chapters are quick and bite sized, the kids are fun and the powers are interesting and different. Kid's love the idea of a family of special powered people and the journey itself is an interesting ride. The added touch of the kid-styled word choices and patterns goes well with reading out loud, and the way the story is presented (bite sized chapters) allows for a little bit of reading each night even when time is pressed. Here and there they even work in some nice messages. Good YA fiction, and we're enjoying it a great deal. Thanks!

Savvy Is a Book to Read Aloud.
Ingrid Law is a superb writer with a penchant for fun language and interesting characters. Her characters are magical, sort of, but mostly they are relateable. I read her books to my children, and Saavy is one of my favorite. This book made my daughter feel powerful, but it made me feel pensive. It made me think about words, both written and spoken and how magic or terrible they can be. It made me think of helplessness and loss. It's a wonderful book worth reading.

Great find!
This book I did judge by its cover. I was browsing in my local book store when this book's colorful cover caught my eye. So, for father's day I received a copy of this book and have since had the wonderful opportunity to read it.Mibs and her family all receive a "power" on their 13th birthday. This power is called their Savvy. These powers can range from the all mighty to the subtle. A few days Mibs father is in a serious car accident and is taken to a distant hospital for care. The morning of her 13th birthday she discovers that her Savvy is waking things up. With this new found power she sets out to awake her father at any costs only to find out her power might not be what it seems. The books time period seems to be in the 50's where moms were still Suzie Homemaker moms and church had an edge of snob to it. It is also written in 1st person and some of the words Mibs uses are very creative and fun. This book was quick to get to the plot going and carried well throughout the whole book straight to its almost tearful conclusion. It reminded me a bit of X-Men with the powers but at the same time unique enough to not draw conclusions. Some of the other family members powers are really unique and interesting once thought about. This is a really short book and it's a fun ride while reading it. Later this month the second installment of this book comes out and I anxiously await its arrival. Ingrid Law definitely deserved the award for this book because of its unique characters, time setting, creativity and heartwarming story. If you have a few hours check this book out. Its worth the time.

School+Project=Sa(vvy)dness.
The book was decent overall. The depression and agony that came with it was the school project. The book was decent to read and I was always sad to have to report about each part. Thanks for reading this rant of a review.

Beloved children's book
My 8 year old powered through this entire series. She absolutely adored the story, and it brought some very interesting discussions about weather and super powers to the dinner table. Highly recommend.

Awesome Book!
This was a very fun book to read with my 5th grader who hates reading. We talk a lot about what our own Savvy is. Highly recommend to anyone with a middle school child that doesn't enjoy reading. I have already ordered the next one, Scumble!!

Mixed reviews
While the story has interesting morals it's not as straight forward as you'd hope for a younger kids book and not complex enough for an older kids book. I did, however, love the conversations that happened because of the book and the contemplation of all of our special abilities

A great read for all ages!!
I purchased this book for my two children who will be entering 4th grade. I am a busy mom who never finds time to read, but after receiving this book from Amazon, I decided I'd attempt to read it before they did. I immediately became attached to the characters and couldn't put the book down, reading it in two days! My son is reading it now and he can't wait to find out what Mibs' savvy is! I'm pretty strict on what my kids are exposed to (books, television, music) and this book meets my approval! Ingrid Law is an excellent writer and I look forward to reading her next book!

Interesting premise. Insufficient tension. Excessively florid wording.
An intriguing premise with a clever title and compelling cover art. I love the concept; however, the prose is excessively florid and the main character is too introspective. There isn't enough tension to maintain interest properly. It feels entirely too introspective to ring true as being the voice of a young teenage girl. The plot could definitely use some thickening.

He likes it.
My son read it. I read some of it. It's like the X-Men meets Appalachia.
